Commonwealth Games village – Ground Breaking

The ground breaking ceremony was on Wednesday 8th May 2019, this is the start of the Village project. It marks the official building work for the housing of 6,500 athletes and officials from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories.

We were invited to theevent to mark this official start of construction work on the residential element of the Commonwealth Games Village, which will later be converted into 1,400 homes for the people of Birmingham.

The ceremony was attended by Team England athletes, local schoolchildren including students from Arena Academy, community representatives and senior figures from the Games Partners (the group of organisations working together to deliver the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games).

The students saw construction equipment, such as diggers that were active on site and the ground-breaking was done by an engraved ceremonial stainless steel spade used to start work officially on the scheme.
