2018 Gymnastics World Cup

ARENA ACADEMY ‘ADOPT A NATION’ FOR BIRMINGHAM’S GYMNASTICS WORLD CUP

Arena Academy has been selected to be part of the Gymnastics World Cup (21-22 March) opening ceremony. Tori Markham and Rhiana Burrell will parade the Russian national flag across the concourse at Arena Birmingham during the first night of the event. The men’s competition will be staged on Wednesday 21st and the women battle it out on Thursday 22nd.

The Gymnastics World Cup will see the world’s top gymnasts competing over all apparatus.  The GB team will be up against gymnasts from eight other nations over two nights of competition in the all-round event, which for the men includes the floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. The women will battle it out on vault, uneven bars, beam and floor.

Budding gymnast and selected flag-bearer, Tori Markham, said: “I love gymnastics so it’s going to be really inspiring. I started when I was five at a local club and now train at the City of Birmingham Club with Dom Cunningham and Joe Fraser. I want to get to the British Championships next year.”

Gymnast turned high jumper, Rhiana Burrell added, “it’s really inspiring to see all of these different sporting events coming to Birmingham.”

Knile Taylor, Community and Student Opportunities Lead, said of the World Cup and build-up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games:

“This is a great opportunity for the students to see what it takes to be an elite sportsperson. The next four years is going to be huge for sport and engaging kids in physical activity. A key concern locally is that children are less active than they were ten years ago so to have all of these sporting events and facilities on their doorstep will help children develop skills and learn to love sport.”

The World Cup on March 21st and March 22nd is one of the first major international sporting events in the city in the countdown to the 2022 Commonwealth Games and will be the last event before gymnasts from the four home nations head to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

In celebration of the city being awarded the Commonwealth Games in 2022, Birmingham City Council are running an exclusive ticket offer for local residents. All tickets for the men’s event on Wednesday 21st March will be priced at £20.22 (booking fees apply).
