The Accelerated Reader programme for all students in Year 7 has been running in our school for the past four years.
Students are expected to read a book that is set at their reading level each month and take a quiz online, which gives them immediate feedback. Students respond to the regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills. This also enables us to monitor the progress that any individual student is making.
In addition, our students with a lower reading age receive peer support from our Year 9 students who read with them and help them with new vocabulary and comprehension. They also read with a Teaching Assistant after school giving them some 1–1 support. With this additional support their reading ability improves throughout the year.
We have seen a boost in reading motivation, and improvement in student’s capacity to read independently. This benefits their learning in school in each and every subject area.
